Sunghee Bang’s Fall 2011 collection once again put her different imaginative take on both form and function on display. The garments showcased complex knits and leathers that used a large grain but were traditionally treated and normally finished. This created a unique feel and look which serves as a fine example of what makes Sunghee Bang’s designs special. Ms. Bang’s different experience with clothing and fashion has created a very distinct sense of fashion design.

She’s taller than most of the women in her culture, and her frustrations with not only the fit but also the styles available to her at home created and cultivated a desire for a very different style. This desire has flowed forcefully into her aesthetic. Her clothes have great character and perform on the border of practical and romantic. Thus, the work retains the unusual romantic sense that is quickly becoming a signature of this young F.I.T graduate’s work. In her Fall 2011 collection, the uniqueness came from the softness of the materials and length of the floor sweeping skirts and dresses. The work was both body hugging sexy and refined at the same time. It’s the precise mixing of these types of juxtaposing forces that makes her designs so compelling. It’s still very early in her career as a designer but to see designs that are dissimilar to almost all but a few of her peers creates great excitement about her future.

Sunghee Bang is one of modaCYCLE’s 10 Designers To Watch In 2011.
