Rachel Antonoff Is In The Garden

When was the last time you were invited to a proper garden party, with pink lemonade, finger sandwiches, and badminton? And when was the last time such a locale was to be found downtown Manhattan and not 500 feet from the West Side Highway? If you were lucky enough to pack into Rachel Antonoff’s very popular presentation of charming, uber-cool, you’d have the answer to both those questions.

Rachel Antonoff – Fall 2012 – What Woods Are These?

Walking into the Rachel Antonoff presentation was walking into a fantasy. Models stood in front of black wildlife cutouts, while others were on a small boat, perhaps arriving from a faraway land where all things cute reside. Peter pan collars and hearts were amongst the imports, while checkered embroidery dazzled the stage.

Rachel Antonoff – Spring 2012 Review – Wednesday Addams Lives!

Antonoff left no question unanswered when it came to her inspiration of Minnie Mouse fused with Wednesday Addams. The two may be completely polar, but the designer managed to make them completely covalent with polka dot rompers, maxi fruit cup print dresses and see-thru chiffon blouses. Thick eyebrows, glum faces, and pigtails complimented her pieces as the models stared into the souls of onlookers. Bold. Enchanting. Utterly haunting.

Designer Rachel Antonoff

When asked to describe a typical night in the Antonoff Manor, her Spring 2012 collection, ready-to-wear designer Rachel Antonoff easily exclaimed, “well, they’re getting ready to murder off their pets and they’re preparing their pet cemetery. I think they’re being really creepy in there.” How’s that for innocent? Antonoff left no question unanswered when it came to her inspiration of Minnie Mouse fused with Wednesday Addams. The two may be completely polar, but the designer managed to make them completely covalent with polka dot rompers, maxi fruit cup print dresses and see-thru chiffon blouses. Rachel Antonoff – Fall 2011

The clothing of Rachel Antonoff is fun but it’s not frilly. It works to well because Ms. Antonoff chooses well. From fabrics and fit to prints and details this is the work of a serious designer. Many in fashion assume that the spirit of her clothes is inspired by the past. What they miss is the timelessness of the girl who buys her clothes, and consequently the clothes themselves.

“You look like an angel, walk like an angel, talk like an angel, but I got wise. You’re the devil in disguise.”

Designer Rachel Antonoff’s clothes seem innocent enough. Full of clever details and fun fabrics. Her prints and colors are always playful and her cuts are easy and free. There’s a youthful exuberance about her collections that always puts her clients in a good mood when they wear her designs. Even the theater surrounding the presentation of her Fall 2011 offering was seeming wholesome fun. A 1950s-era school dance, complete with an all-girl rock band and models portraying the various archetypes of high school life. But wait, in the midst of this pleasant tableau, why is that girl spiking the punch with a flask? Why are there a pack of girls on the stands with the eyes of hungry wolves? Why did the one girl bring a cat? Is this Sunnydale? It all fits with a Rachel Antonoff collection and more importantly with her client. Her collections are often described as retro or retro-inspired, but she told me she doesn’t understand that at all. It’s likely because of who she designs for. The Rachel Antonoff Fall 2011 collection continues the development of this fascinating and serious young talent. Continue reading “Rachel Antonoff – Fall 2011”

modaCYCLE recently hosted a showcase party for a group of emerging designers whom we believe showed the most promise during the most recent New York Fashion Week back in September. It was a chill vibe affair held in the beautiful Italian furniture showroom Natuzzi Soho (101 Greene Street). Each designer who participated showed three looks throughout the evening. Our intention was to put emerging designers with viable collections in the same room with boutique owners and buyers from retail chains, and it seemed to go quite well. Rachel Antonoff – Spring 2011 – New York

Rachel Antonoff once again gets the award for having the most original presentation within the New York Spring 2011 shows. Citing children and their dynamic energy as her inspiration, the designer created a setting of a child’s dreamland in a charming townhouse in the West Village.

Rachel Antonoff once again gets the award for having the most original presentation within the New York Spring 2011 shows. Citing children and their dynamic energy as her inspiration, the designer created a setting of a child’s dreamland in a charming townhouse in the West Village. Saturday morning rolled around and cue the entrance of the children, aka models dressed in whimsical, girlish frocks doing everything from drawing, to toasting marshmallows, to taking a bath.
