This season, Toronto designer Jeremy Laing<\/a> looked to his key strength, layering, to form a collection marked by imposing shoulders, myriad textures, and fine detail prints. Mohair and rich wools made multiple appearances, in contrast with sheer silks that flowed beneath their heavier counterparts. Arms, legs, and flesh peered through opened zippers, as jackets and coats looked to shoulders for support.<\/p>\n

The silhouettes remained rather boyish from last season, though Laing added dark floral prints to coats and dresses for a slightly more feminine aesthetic. Unlike in previous seasons, however, Laing restricted his color palette to grays and browns, making this seem as very cohesive collection. The designer proved to have evolved here in his finding a signature style from previous seasons, as details like his oversize shoulders and zippered seams referenced each other throughout the collection even as those things changed from look to look.<\/p>\n

It will be interesting to see how Laing\u2019s collection evolves from the runway onward. Some of his garments looked almost too large for the models, perhaps better tailored to \u201creal\u201d women. Furthermore, Laing\u2019s individual pieces are both easily adapted to a variety of looks and well-crafted enough to shine on more conservative outfits. This is where Laing\u2019s growing maturity shines more than ever as he has created a collection that is first and foremost practical and is sure to contribute to his growing notoriety.<\/p>\n
