Thakoon Panichgul was recently nominated for the Swiss Textile Federation\u2019s prestigious Stella Contemporary Fashion Award<\/a>. He graciously responded to our correspondence interview prior to the awards show.<\/p>\n

How many years have you been in the business?<\/p>\n

5\u00a0 years<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What is your fashion education?<\/p>\n

I studied at Parsons in New York.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Did you work for major designers before starting your own line?<\/p>\n

No.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Where have you traveled?<\/p>\n

Across America, North America, Mexico, Europe, Japan, China, Thailand<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What are your major influences?<\/p>\n

Artists, Street Culture, New York<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What are your favorite materials?<\/p>\n

I don’t have favorite materials, but I’m inclined to fabrics that are classic but twisted.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When did you start sewing?<\/p>\n

My mother and grandmother were both seamstresses so I was exposed to sewing at a very young age.\u00a0 I started sewing myself around the age of seven.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Tell us about your first show or presentation, and how you got here from there.<\/p>\n

It was for the Spring 2005 season–a tiny 10 look presentation, sandwiched between two big shows.\u00a0 We got here by taking baby steps…<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What do you look for in a model?<\/p>\n

It’s about the mood of the collection, but usually I gravitate towards models that have more than one persona.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What is your favorite fashion era?<\/p>\n

I love the 1940’s and the 1970’s.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Do you have any pets? What kind?<\/p>\n

My dog, Stevie, a Yorkie Chi Hua Hua mix<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Are you truly impressed by the work of any other specific designers?<\/p>\n

Schiaparelli, Chanel<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Which famous designer\u2019s career would you most like to have?<\/p>\n

One that sticks to his guns.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What is the best way to start the day off right?<\/p>\n

A good cup of coffee.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What are your favorite guilty pleasures?<\/p>\n

Potato chips.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What is the best way to relax in the city?<\/p>\n

Roam around aimlessly.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Who were your idols as a child?<\/p>\n

Bruce Webber.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Do or did you practice other arts?<\/p>\n

What is your favorite New York neighborhood?<\/p>\n

The West Village<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What is your favorite New York restaurant?<\/p>\n

Which is your favorite museum in the city, and why?<\/p>\n

Neue Gallery because I love German art.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What kind of movies do you like?<\/p>\n

I watch everything; I like sad movies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What was your goal with the current collection?<\/p>\n

I wanted to create shapes that follow the body form but still have motion.\u00a0 It\u2019s about movement and restriction.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What was your technical inspiration for achieving that goal, and what obstacles did you face and attempt to overcome?<\/p>\n

I’m really into draping and construction and ways of twisting the classic construction of clothes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What were your visual inspirations for the current collection?<\/p>\n

Samuri Warriors and Surfers<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What world and local events most affected your creative process in preparing for this season?<\/p>\n

I just wanted fluidity in fabrics.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What is your favorite piece in the current collection?<\/p>\n

Look 1<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What sets that piece apart from the rest of the collection?<\/p>\n

It is the heart of the show.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Do you feel you challenged yourself enough in creating this new work?<\/p>\n

I am always trying to find ways to push myself even further.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Do you feel like you fully achieved your goal for the season?<\/p>\n

Yes<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Fashion being reflective of society and ever-changing culture, what outside influences are affecting your approach to creating your next collection?<\/p>\n

The way that people wear clothes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
