{"id":5332,"date":"2009-12-14T16:35:25","date_gmt":"2009-12-14T20:35:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.modacycle.com\/?p=5332"},"modified":"2010-09-03T16:23:22","modified_gmt":"2010-09-03T20:23:22","slug":"the-harlem-fashion-row-spring-2010-collections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/modacycle.com\/old_modacycle_jan_2016\/2009\/12\/14\/the-harlem-fashion-row-spring-2010-collections\/","title":{"rendered":"The Harlem Fashion Row &#8211; Spring 2010 Collections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>story by Faith Bowman<br \/>\nphotos by Charles Beckwith<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after New York Fashion Week, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harlemsfashionrow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harlem&#8217;s Fashion Row<\/a> geared up to present collections by emerging designers at a fine arts venue in Harlem called The Gatehouse. Operated by a collective dedicated to promoting Harlem&#8217;s enduring influence and contribution to the fashion world, Fashion Row featured four lines, including one by recent <a href=\"http:\/\/bloggingprojectrunway.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Project Runway<\/a> alum Epperson.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Along with Epperson, the designers of labels Dinna Soliman, Joe Duran, and LiaLia showed collections on an oddly-lit runway in The Gatehouse&#8217;s black box theater space.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the show, fashion legend Stephen Burrows was given a moment in the spotlight, as well.\u00a0 Mr. Burrows, one of the first internationally recognized African-Americans, has been a force in the fashion industry since graduating from the state&#8217;s Fashion Institute of Technology in 1969. The organizers screened a short but moving video about his career, and he was given a standing ovation.<\/p>\n<p>Each designer brought their own take on where fashion is going for the coming season, and all had a distinctly defiant Harlem vibe. Dust and braids adorned the models heads, and combat boots covered their feet. Statement leggings in op-art patterns were paired with hip-length rough-textured jackets and blazers.
