Leather, leather, and more leather at the Fall 2010 runway show of Canadian outerwear powerhouse Mackage (pronounced like “package”). Eran Elfassy and Elisa Dahan used leather studs inserted into shoulders, collars, cuffs, and belts, where other materials are traditional.
Though the leather worked nicely in most ways, it went over the foul line once the designers integrated the scheme into heavy-looking bib-style necklaces.
Also seen prominently on the runway this season was the use of collar and hood combinations, which have a graphic framing effect on the wearer’s faces.
The designers continue to use shoulder pads/inserts in full force, with many women’s pieces having dual and even triple-layered pads built onto the outside of the garments.
Asked about their goals at their Fall 2009 show, the duo replied that they wanted to be known as the designers that “re-invented the coat.” Whether they feel they have achieved this, we could only speculate. We can say only that they seem to be doing a fair amount of exploring and experimentation, which is good.
