Katie Gallagher’s Frozen Memories

The room was dark, a-tonal, screeching wails transmitted by the D.J. pervaded the small space, and an eager crowd squeezed past a long platform atop which a double row of models stood still, frozen in the gloom. This was the scene at Katie Gallagher’s Fall 2013 presentation, aptly named “The Winter That Froze You Away.” With clothes bleakly named “Tundra Dress,” “Mourn Jacket,” and the especially harsh sounding “Frostbite Bodysuit,” one might assume melancholy or a bad case of S.A.D. had overcome the young R.I.S.D. graduate. She spoke about her search for the balance between autobiographical expression and universal appeal – and no matter the grim visions which may have pervaded her process, what resulted was a selection of 16 warm and wearable garments.

Katie Gallagher Just Gets Better and Better

Katie Gallagher is a key player in the vanguard of young talent in American fashion. Her work is romantic and provocative with an underlying toughness. The Spring 2013 collection added in a few haute couture touches that tease with the potential of exciting unexplored territories. The use of matelasse and some excellent choices in pleating and gathering shows a growing maturity. Her staple work in leather and leggings prove that Ms. Gallagher is true to her clients, but she is undeniably reaching out to conquer new shores.

Katie Gallagher – Fall 2012 – On Silent Soil

After several seasons of making a steady noise, Katie Gallagher’s Silent Soil is her most grounded collection yet. On Thursday, February 9th, The Standard Hotel helped showcase trademark Gallagher moments veiled by a subdued seduction. Faded was the amped aggression of last season, making way for a new serenity. Her “favorite so far,” Gallagher’s collection charmed in silk, chiffon, leather, boiled wool, and shearling.

Katie Gallagher – Spring 2012 Review – Gallagher Is Out For Blood

What’s red and black and highly anticipated all over? Katie Gallagher’s Spring 2012 collection is what. The eponymous line’s Red Red Blood was certainly no joke, however. Working with a minimal color palette, namely variations of black and red, Gallagher was able to utterly arrest her audience. A Cold Cave soundtrack sent models coursing through a forest of syrupy, ‘blood-filled’ vials in creations that tucked and billowed. From the zippered hemline of a voluminous skirt, to the surprise back or no back of a top, her adept tailoring was in full force.

Katie Gallagher – Fall 2011

Overall, Katie Gallagher’s Fall 2011 collection keeps this young talent on the map and headed in the right direction.

Katie Gallagher’s Fall 2011 collection continued an exploratory growth of her art as a designer. Her developing signatures of mixing hard and soft and flow and structure were still strongly in evidence, but this time there was a little bit more flow than stiffness. The most prominent development this season was in her intelligent use of textured fabrics. Fabric sourcing is a key component in the process of designing a collection, and Ms. Gallagher once again displayed a keen eye in her choices. Her ridged, dappled and textured fabrics were incorporated into garments in sections or squares that peeked from under flowing cuts in some pieces and stiff structured designs in others. This had the impact of creating the appearance of strength as the revealed sections felt strong and armored.

Ms. Gallagher also continued to provide NYC’s Generation Next with some of the most intriguing tights that can be found anywhere. Each season she manages to find new ways to render such a simple item in myriad new and interesting ways. It was pleasing to see some bright colors finding their way into the collection and I do hope that in the future they find their way into more of her work. Overall, Katie Gallagher’s Fall 2011 collection keeps this young talent on the map and headed in the right direction. Continue reading “Katie Gallagher – Fall 2011”

10 Designers To Watch In 2011

modaCYCLE recently hosted a showcase party for a group of emerging designers whom we believe showed the most promise during the most recent New York Fashion Week back in September.

modaCYCLE recently hosted a showcase party for a group of emerging designers whom we believe showed the most promise during the most recent New York Fashion Week back in September. It was a chill vibe affair held in the beautiful Italian furniture showroom Natuzzi Soho (101 Greene Street). Each designer who participated showed three looks throughout the evening. Our intention was to put emerging designers with viable collections in the same room with boutique owners and buyers from retail chains, and it seemed to go quite well. Katie Gallagher – Spring 2011 – New York

Having worked with black, white, and gray in her past collections, Ms. Gallagher really took a step forward with her use of blues and reds here. When paired with her modern patterns and slender tailoring, the result was masculine gladiator meets cool city girl, and it works.

Aptly titled, “Arena,” Katie Gallagher’s Spring 2011 collection really packed a punch. Recognized in past seasons for her incredibly unique leggings, the designer once again proved to be a front-runner in artistic, innovative, and sleek legwear. This season though, the vision that Ms. Gallagher’s presented was not confined to below the waist. This collection felt perfectly planned and perfectly finished. Athletic “jock-goth” silhouettes provided a strong, coherent image. Points must also be awarded to the designer for her use of color this season.
