Kaelen – What Barriers?

Designer Kaelen Haworth’s work seems to embody the term “crisp organic,” yet with this Spring 2013 collection she was pushing the envelope on juxtaposing rougher organic materials with obvious synthetics, as neoprene contrasted in close orbit with silk and jersey throughout most of the collection.

Kaelen – Every Piece Has A Story

New York City is among the most fast paced cities in the world. Just as restaurants come and go, so do designers. It is safe to say that this is no playground, as here the big kids win and the weak ones fade quickly away. Not exactly the most heart-warming environment for a young designer like Kaelen Haworth, yet the friendly Toronto-native is now wrapping up her fifth season in the big (and scary) apple, while so many of her contemporaries are scattered along the roadside. Haworth’s collections are anything but juvenile. With a background in English literature, Haworth brings to the table the kind of quick-witted intelligence that gives the young designer a somewhat mature demure.

Kaelen – Fall 2012 – Without Compromise

“How do you stay true to yourself and grow? That’s what I was trying to do with this collection.” With her Fall 2012 collection, New York-based designer Kaelen Haworth arrived at a traditional conundrum that has faced every designer who has ever met with success. A fashion designer creates a first collection and much to their relief they receive some retail success and positive press, and perhaps for the second collection they nervously try to do something similar but better, and with their third they begin to play around with a few new ideas but are sure to include pieces that will please buyers and clients. But the artistic mind is a restless mind, and with a designer’s fourth offering, they often feel a need to push, to invent, to do new. How do you do that and not erase that which has been responsible for the success you have enjoyed up to this point?

Kaelen – Spring 2012 Review – Nymphs In Boho

Toronto native Kaelen Farncombe, recently married and now Kaelen Haworth, first introduced her eponymous line Kaelen in 2010 with signature bias hemlines and sharp pleats. These are found in the Spring 2012 set, but the collection as a whole takes our image of this designer in new directions. She uses fresh fabrics to express her clean silhouettes, saying she is inspired by touching the materials and letting the design flow from the feel of the fabric. This approach can be seen in an ethereal draped pocket dress in cream crushed velvet and a tie front dress in nude crinkle cotton.
