Sally LaPointe – Fall 2012 – Sharply Soft

Transformation is the theme of the Sally LaPointe Fall 2012 collection. The collection was inspired by the book “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka, and marks a transformation for the designer. In her fourth season, Ms. LaPointe says she feels closer to her customer. This collection affords her the opportunity to show her softer side, while still remaining true to her point of view.

Designer Sally LaPointe

Sally LaPointe‘s growth as a designer has been a joy to watch. Season after season she’s produced increasingly refined and intricate work that expresses her vision and showcases her skills. One definitely gets a feeling of a designer driven by a need to find a way to express a deeply held ideal. She’s seeking a balance in something greater than just clothing. “I kind of wanted to challenge myself to see if I could do the same sort of architectural modern designs that I have been doing the past couple of seasons, but doing them in more of a feminine way. I loosened up a little bit.” Continue reading “Sally LaPointe – Spring 2012 Collection – The Page Turns”

Sally LaPointe – No Wonder Lady Gaga Is Wearing It

Sally LaPointe is one of the higher crests on the new wave of New York City fashion. This is not because her work has been being worn by Lady Gaga. That is a nice moment, but it is an effect not a cause. It is her intriguing creations that place her near the top of this new flood of talent that has been flowing down the catwalks of New York Fashion Week for the past few years. Her personal discipline and artistic self awareness are much greater than you would expect from a 27 year-old.

Sally LaPointe is one of the higher crests on the new wave of New York City fashion. This is not because her work has been worn by Lady Gaga. That is a nice moment, but it is an effect and not a cause. It is her intriguing creations that place her near the top of this new flood of talent that has been flowing down the catwalks of New York Fashion Week for the past few years. Her personal discipline and artistic self awareness are much greater than you would expect from a 27 year-old. It’s possible to ascribe that to her being a native of Marblehead Massachusetts and coming from sturdy, “New England stock,” but closer to the mark is that Ms. LaPointe has an impressive history of decisiveness and drive. This has been on display since she was accepted into the outstanding Rhode Island School of Design for painting in 2007 and realized she wanted to be a fashion designer instead. From that fateful day she’s been a committed creator and has had a laser-like focus on improving her artistic expression. It is an inner journey but it is in no way a leisurely wander. Sally LaPointe – Fall 2011

This collection – the textures, the colors, the cuts, the details – was out of this world.

Sally LaPointe’s designs look like formal wear for the model outer space tourist.  The shapes are exaggerated. Double shoulder epaulettes define a gorgeous, high necked black metallic silk jacket, the same detail used on the hips to flesh out a turquoise and white swirl printed silk jersey mini with leggings.  The design concept, inspired by photographic processing, came to Ms. LaPointe by way of another very talented female artist, painter and photographer Lillian Bassman.  Ms. Bassman, used her camera to explore form. When her style and vision fell out of favor, she discarded four decades of negatives and prints.  Her work was rediscovered and recognized in the nineties.

Ms. Bassman, still alive and kicking at the age of 94 by the way, is the designer’s favorite photographer.  Bassman’s story inspired LaPointe’s ideas about latent images coming into light.  The show began with looks cool, wintery silver tones, moving into series of reds, including a printed silk mid-length asymmetrical georgette jacket canvased another ghostly white swirl pattern from the neck to the hemline.  Next came the blues including that astonishing torquoise mini, and a navy lambskin jacket and silk lame pant with hip epaulettes, quite reminiscent of Martian summers. Overall, the looks were radical and bold, but also beautiful and distinctly feminine.  This collection – the textures, the colors, the cuts, the details – was out of this world.
