Transformation is the theme of the Sally LaPointe Fall 2012 collection. The collection was inspired by the book “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka, and marks a transformation for the designer. In her fourth season, Ms. LaPointe says she feels closer to her customer. This collection affords her the opportunity to show her softer side, while still remaining true to her point of view.
The silhouettes are sleek and the lines are clean, but the overall effect is relaxed. The color palette is that of autumn; taupe, burgundy, rich browns, brightened by metalics and sequins. Ms. LaPointe developed her own fabrics for this collection, which included innovative cashmere backed by neoprene, used to great effect in an oatmeal-colored coat.
Ms. LaPointe’s Rhode Island School of Design background, I am sure, helped her create the stunning Metamorphosis Print seen on variety of pieces, a leather jacket with the signature Sally LaPointe shoulders, and a flowing chiffon dress. She credits her time at RISD with helping her find herself as an artist. Pants with draping were created after seeing a dress from her first collection worn over slim trousers.
The show was book-ended by two caped looks that took flight across the runway. An ivory caped ensemble opened the show a flawless day look of the modern uptown woman, whether for a business meeting or charity luncheon, and a black caped dress closed the show, an evening gown with the beauty of a black butterfly.
