Araks Makes It Sexy But Not Salacious

“I want women to feel beautiful, special, in a quiet way, in a subtle way.” Araks Yeramyan’s greatest strength as a designer may be her thorough thoughtfulness. She is a very considered person and has developed a design process that blends focus and freedom, which is a comfort zone reserved for veteran artists alone. Her clothes are soft, subtle, refined and beautiful. There is structure and detail, but it is incorporated in a seamless way. Her flow and softness are never disturbed.

“I want women to feel beautiful, special, in a quiet way, in a subtle way.”

Araks Yeramyan’s greatest strength as a designer may be her thorough thoughtfulness. There’s not a great distance between the woman and the fashion she creates. Araks Yeramyan is a soft-spoken woman, but there is an intelligent strength to her that is not that far from the surface. So it is with her designs, whether her ready to wear or lingerie, they are feminine but not frilly, sexy but not salacious. Continue reading “Araks Makes It Sexy But Not Salacious”

Araks – Fall 2011

Her inspirations and affinity for color and texture first have given birth to a wonderful assortment of ready-to-wear, beautiful to behold creations.

Inspired by the 1968 film “The Color of Pomegranates,” Araks Yeramyan’s ready-to wear for autumn is a study in the astonishing loveliness of color, contrasting the dark shades ruling the season. The film, a treatise on the life of 16th century Armenian poet Sayat-Nova, a favorite of Ms. Yeramyan, is a lyrical series of tableau vivants staged in Armenian costume. “The Color of Pomegranates” features a color palette of earth tones as a canvas for blacks, white and dark reds, lit with over-saturated sunlight. The designer has watched it many times, and the influence is visible in her designs’ romantic expression. There are twenty looks in shades of deep auburn reds, soft dark blues, washed whites, and soft, extravagant textures.

The leather pleated skirt in earth with ombre organza inserts is a striking work of art, much like the film, its something to view up close more than once. It’s both whimsical and unexpected. Araks Yeremayan is also a lingerie designer, so the clothes she produces tend to possess an undertone of  innocent sensuality. The lush colors in boiled wool, washed silks, and angoras give the modest cuts, no plunging necklines or tight fits here, a ladylike sensibility. Ms. Yeremayan is a designer in every sense of the word, and enjoys sharing beauty with the world. Her inspirations and affinity for color and texture first have given birth to a wonderful assortment of ready-to-wear, beautiful to behold creations. Continue reading “Araks – Fall 2011”

Araks – Spring 2011 – New York

If Araks Yeramyan has a consistent theme in her aesthetic it would have to be revelation. She plays with transparency, she plays with cut outs and sheer patterned fabrics and prints. It’s that element and the even further contrast it creates with her full cuts that make her work so intriguing.

Some designers’ creations fall neatly into the hands of certain verbs and adjectives. The fact that describing their work comes easily usually indicates that they are creating clothing that while uniquely theirs and of a high quality has in a general way been seen before. There is an existing set of descriptors that will allow a writer or reporter to pass on the experience of the garments and of the collection. However, every once in a great while a designer makes the terms of the past fail in the present. Araks Yeramyan is very much one of those designers. Her clothing is not only stubbornly different from anyone else, but it is so in a way that is eludes description. Her Araks Spring 2011 collection was inspired by Dutch dress of the 20th century, and on a few of the pieces the rustic feel could be felt emanating from some of the design details. An homage to a wholesome simpler time this was not though, as the models’ breasts were plainly visible on several of the garments and bras were seen through others. That contrast right there is a part of Ms. Yeramyan’s aesthetic; for example, her love of early 20th Century shirt collars which make appearances in many of her collections appearing on a shirt so sheer you can see everything. The saying is that “the devil is in the details,” but in fashion that’s often where the designer is, where the signature is penned. Continue reading “Araks – Spring 2011 – New York”
