Marc Jacobs – Lots of Stripes and Shiny Stuff

It is always a spectacle. Marc Jacobs is hard to read from season to season, but you can always expect a big production, long lines, gate crashers, and a lot of paparazzi hanging around. At most fashion shows there is a packet of paper on every chair called the line sheet, which tells you about the clothing, usually the color and what it is made from, like chantilly lace or angora, so the wholesale buyers know what they are looking at from some distance away from the models. The Marc Jacobs line sheet for this season says nothing about the clothing except that it exists. In fact, half the packet was a list of names that the brand wanted to thank, like movie credits on paper.

Moschino Men’s Goes A Little Bit 80’s for Spring 2010

Dip back into the early-’80s style file for men and you’ll find slim tight pants, burst colors, stripes, and mostly single color clothes, but every piece was worn matched with several other dissimilar pieces, which creating colorful match-ups and when done right sympathetic pattern jazz. It was the begining of pop fashion. John Travolta, the late Micheal Jackson, the hair metal bands, and even (in an Annie Hall gender bender way) Madonna all sported these looks.

Marc Jacobs Fall 2009 – A Tale of Two Stories

No revolutions in accessory design this week, but much like what Andy and Debb marched down the catwalk two nights before, Marc seems to be pulling out the 80’s style guide and rewriting it with gusto. At first glance, simple lines, simple silhouettes, but looking closer, my God, it’s made of stars! All the outlines are tremendously complex embroidery and patterning of myriad non-fabric objects. Beyond the demi-Couture outfits was almost a whole other line. Vibrantly colored coats and ponchos were paraded out with hair and makeup that really should have been accompanied by The Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams.

Either Marc Jacobs’ PR machine is on a celeb-free diet, or everyone was over in The Tent at Bryant Park for William Rast. Whether the paparazzi-magnets showed up not, the color and detail sure did, in this skillfully-executed collection. Continue reading “Marc Jacobs Fall 2009 – A Tale of Two Stories”
