Jeremy Laing – Rave On, Barbie

Jeremy Laing lives and works in Toronto, where the winter is long and dark, and summer is lovingly referred to as three months of bad sledding. An understandable longing for hot summer days and hotter nights informed his Spring-Summer 2014 collection, shown in New York, where we take heat waves for grumpily granted. When the sprightly young designer was asked to verbally autograph the show moments before it began he chirruped, “its Malibu Beach Barbie goes to a rave!”

Jeremy Laing – Fall 2012 – Layering Forward

This season, designer Jeremy Laing looked to his key strength, layering, to form a collection marked by imposing shoulders, myriad textures, and fine detail prints. Mohair and rich wools made multiple appearances, in contrast with sheer silks that flowed beneath their heavier counterparts. Arms, legs, and flesh peered through opened zippers, as jackets and coats looked to shoulders for support.

Jeremy Laing – Fall 2011

The moonscape print long jersey dress appeared to get the most cameras attention, well-fit and sexy. Another stunning and eye-catching piece was a silk tulle cowled column dress with a hand of glory on the chest. The suits in Mr Laing’s collection also showcased his architectural talents with his precise cuts. Overall it was a very nicely-constructed and sophisticated collection.

It is interesting to note that if you photograph into the light a person who is facing away from a bright window, the light that finds its way onto their skin looks more than a little bit like moonlight. Dualities exist in nature and legend and design, and it is in their contrast that we often find the most fascinating ideas. Toronto-based designer Jeremy Laing, known for a use of heavily geometric ideas in his work, recently found himself preoccupied with ideas about the winter equinox and the lunar eclipses, and from this he has produced a Fall 2011 collection that references binary notions of moon and sun. Much as Luna and Sol don’t appear together in the sky very often, when they do it is oddly stimulating and somewhat awe-inspiring, and it really works beautifully into what he has created. Jeremy Laing – Spring 2011

Many forward-looking designers seem to create pieces that are very hard-edged or hyper-structured. Amongst their contemporaries though, there are just a handful of designers who have a softer and more natural view of the future. This is where Jeremy Laing fits in.

Inventive, innovative, and imaginative Jeremy Laing’s Spring 2011 collection showed that in his twelfth season he is still committed to expanding his repertoire. His love of geometry was still evident, and that is his signature, but his work with knits in the collection was new and bold. The show for the most part was more draped flow than structure, which worked perfectly with his fabric choices and the shapes he wielded them into. Continue reading “Jeremy Laing – Spring 2011”
