A Détacher – Fall 2012 – Confidence Structures

A Détacher’s distinguished lady is taking a trip to Japan. She took her knitted high-waist pants with her from last season, but this time paired them with more structured boxy cuts. Kimono shapes populated the upper half of the body as bellowing sleeves began past the shoulder. Oversize Peter Pan collars were also on the menu, paired with oversized knitwear for comfort. Other neck details included futuristic thick corded necklines, worn with veteran designer Mona Kowalska’s signature touch of knitwear, here knitted skirts which even the most conservative of us women long for in the depths of winter.

Jeremy Laing – Fall 2012 – Layering Forward

This season, designer Jeremy Laing looked to his key strength, layering, to form a collection marked by imposing shoulders, myriad textures, and fine detail prints. Mohair and rich wools made multiple appearances, in contrast with sheer silks that flowed beneath their heavier counterparts. Arms, legs, and flesh peered through opened zippers, as jackets and coats looked to shoulders for support.

Esosa NY – Fall 2012 – Meridional Geishas

Southern American girls with a Japanese twist is the theme behind this line and its bright colors, structured silhouettes, and complex textures. Fashion fanatics clad in black glided past young ballerinas in tutus at the Alvin Ailey Studio to get into Emilio Sosa’s Fall 2012 Esosa NY presentation. Stools were set up on a stage placed in front of street-side windows, permitting passers-by a glimpse of the colorful debut.

Karolina Zmarlak – Fall 2012 – El Matadora

Easily her best work to date, Karolina Zmarlak’s Fall 2012 collection is luxury and culture at its finest. Inspired by bullfighting matadors and the politics of Spain, Zmarlak created a collection that reflected well the vigor and depth of her inspiration. Her Spring 2012 collection referenced women under communism in Poland, further evidence Zmarlak does her homework. “Spain was in the position that Poland’s in now, about 20 years ago, so this collection is an homage to my business partner’s love for Spain, but also how I think their future will play out,” Zmarlak explained.

Christian Cota – Fall 2012 – Crafted Couture

Christian Cota’s Fall 2012 collection proved that, though Cota’s strength lies in his prints, he is first and foremost a sculptor. Upon viewing his collection, one is quick to see that he designs with the woman’s every angle in mind; the front, the back, and even that ever-so-slightly three quarter view that only she can detect when she looks in the mirror. Cota’s clothes wrap around the woman’s body not just to clothe it, but rather to hug and brush it so that she may walk out into the world as an empowered individual.

Wayne – Fall 2012 – Becoming The Other

A menacing tone swept over the audience as the lights faded to black seconds before the models appeared at Wayne Lee’s Fall 2012 runway show. Eerie sounds signaled something wicked was on its way – and wicked cool it was. From start to finish, Wayne’s key look for Fall was relaxed (cue the white snakeskin Converse flats) with a side of toughness (add two parts leather, one part suede).

Katya Leonovich – Fall 2012 – Shapes of Things To Come

Call it “couture control,” the ability of designers to create shapes and contours and stop or force movement with invisible techniques, never ceases to amaze. Katya Leonovich’s Fall 2012 collection is rich in the studied skills of couture craftsmanship. Her works are fashioned from substantial boucles, protective leathers, corsets, and a vivid print which captured the chaotic beauty of New York City itself. Across the collection there was a feel of padding, of the comfort of protection. Not just in material and thickness but in sharpness and boldness. These are clothes for the woman who, while she likes to get the looks, does want to intimidate a touch, to keep the fools at bay.

Fabiola Arias – Fall 2012 – A Wicked Garden Party

A field of exotic flowers was the essence of the new collection of talented young designer Fabiola Arias presented for Fall 2012 at the Americano Hotel. Consisting of entirely dresses, mostly of cocktail length, models disguised as birds of paradise gracefully strode down the short runway. Despite simple silhouettes, these designs were anything but commonplace. Flamingo pink, canary yellow, and robin red lent well to the tropical presentation.
