Timo Weiland – Designer Feature

“The three of us are going on about our creative choices every minute, about what works what doesn’t. We might even be working on another season and say this is great for next Fall or this is great for Spring.” The clothes that Timo Weiland, Alan Eckstein, and Donna Kang create strongly capture your attention whenever you see them, but it’s not always easy to pinpoint what has drawn your eye. Their distinctive designs are definitely a team effort.

Racism In Fashion

I was recently reading a fashion blog entry which attempted to go into detail about examples of racism in the fashion industry, titled “6 Reasons Why Fashion Is Inherently Racist.” To open the story the author had posted an image taken from naiveboy.com which substituted the “O” in “Vogue” with a swastika, but it was more than just the illustration I found more sensation than substance, and here is why.

I was recently reading a fashion blog entry which attempted to go into detail about examples of racism in the fashion industry, titled “6 Reasons Why Fashion Is Inherently Racist.” To open the story the author, Emma Jones, had posted an image taken from naiveboy.com which substituted the “O” in “Vogue” with a swastika, but it was more than just the illustration I found more sensation than substance, and here is why. Venexiana – Designer Feature

Venexiana designer Kati Stern is a forthright woman with a handful of seemingly unrelated passions. Fashion designer, architect, classical pianist. Born in Budapest and influenced equally by Venice and the violent sounds at CBGB’s, her designs are red carpet classics but always it’s elegance with an edge.

Laruicci – Photo Feature

This is a photo feature on designer Lauren Ruicci. Laruicci jewelry pieces are presented here with garments from Veda and footwear from Ash and Jean Michel Cazabat.

Lauren Ruicci’s jewelery is designed to help its wearer. It is not meant to be simply adornment, but more an enhancement. The suburbia and golf courses of her native Farmington Hills, Michigan, outside of Detroit, certainly seems a poor fit for the bold and brash artist that Ms. Ruicci has become. However, the more time you spend with her, the more you realize that there is a gentleness and an almost reluctance about her, that seems more in line with her roots. She seems almost embarrassed by all the attention and celebrity that her designs have brought her. This is really the key to understanding Lauren as a designer; she believes in the power of jewelry to be a positive transformational force. Continue reading “Laruicci – Photo Feature”

50 Most Talented Fashion Designers

The 50 Most Talented Fashion Designers in the World – 2011

compiled by Seth Friedermann

This is a subjective list of those designers that I feel have demonstrated remarkable imagination and construction talent over the last few years. This is not a ranked order and there are many designers who are just off the edge of this list, and we acknowledge that a strong case can be made for them. In fact, we encourage conversation about this list.

1. Ralph Rucci
2. Rei Kawakubo
3. Albert Kriemler
4. Azzedine Alaia
5. Karl Lagerfeld Continue reading “50 Most Talented Fashion Designers”

Nanette Lepore – Fall 2011

There was a lightness and breath of breezy contentment to Nanette Lepore’s Fall 2011 collection. Creative and clever detailing provide a compelling complexity that once again points out, although Mrs. Lepore is justly famous for fun and breezy clothing, she is a serious thinker and designer. Each piece felt complete and fully realized. This season was laden with meaning for Nanette Lepore, as it was inspired by her late mother and in many ways felt as much of a celebration of her life as it did any sort of austere memorial.

There was a lightness and breath of breezy contentment to Nanette Lepore’s Fall 2011 collection. Creative and clever detailing provide a compelling complexity that once again points out, although Mrs. Lepore is justly famous for fun and frilly clothing, she is a serious thinker and designer. Sunghee Bang – Photo Feature

Sitting down with Sunghee Bang was an inspiring experience. Never mind that the tall beauty could be a model herself, her pieces are inspired by her own love of comfort, what works on her tall frame (though they can work on anyone’s frame), and androgyny.
