V is For Fashion Week

February 14th often finds itself in New York Fashion Week, and it usually catches most of us off guard. “It’s Valentines Day?” ask the overworked and exhausted reporters, photographers, designers, publicists, and models. This season we’re prepared though. Here is a modaCYCLE salute to little hearts that say “be mine.” This feature includes looks from Jenna Leigh Lingerie, Betsey Johnson Intimates, and OnGossamer, along with a delicious Mast Brothers (made in Brooklyn) Sea Salt dark chocolate bar.

Understanding Fabiola Arias

“I’m really inspired by nature and making my own textures and surface treatments. That’s really my main interest in design. I’m not satisfied buying something already made.I really loved the challenge of cutting up and shredding fabric and stitching it back together. Collaging it. I felt like I was painting with fabrics.”

Fabiola Arias was born in Havana, Cuba, and July 18th of this year was the 20th anniversary of her arrival in Miami. Attending arts schools since she was a child, Ms. Arias has a background in sculpture and painting. The mediums collide with fabrics in her collections, where she likes the idea of not working on flat surfaces. It has led her to be interested in creating her own fabrics, the Fashion Group International Rising Star Award, brand placement in the Neiman Marcus couture boutiques, and an almost cult following by some of high fashion’s most elite consumers. Kaelen – Every Piece Has A Story

New York City is among the most fast paced cities in the world. Just as restaurants come and go, so do designers. It is safe to say that this is no playground, as here the big kids win and the weak ones fade quickly away. Not exactly the most heart-warming environment for a young designer like Kaelen Haworth, yet the friendly Toronto-native is now wrapping up her fifth season in the big (and scary) apple, while so many of her contemporaries are scattered along the roadside. Haworth’s collections are anything but juvenile. With a background in English literature, Haworth brings to the table the kind of quick-witted intelligence that gives the young designer a somewhat mature demure.

Abigail Stewart – Following Beyond

Abigail Stewart feels her way through fashion and culture in a remarkably intimate way. Viewing her designs gives evidence to the fact that their creator is someone with a full artistic vision in her mind. In our interview, she described how she often has to battle with her dresses as though they are blank canvases, because it isn’t as simple as making a sketch and creating a sample. Ms. Stewart begins with a general source of inspiration, whether reptiles or ivory and bone, then imagines structures for her pieces. It is in the physical molding of the dress that her original concept is transmuted into something new.
