Mandy Coon – Nerd Noir

There’s a great deal for which Mandy Coon does not get much credit. People chatter about her quirkiness, or consistent experimentation with leather, but her actual skills as a designer are rarely discussed. Yet, this rising star designer possesses one of the qualities most critical for long term success: the ability to create designs that are subtly distinctive. With Ms. Coon’s Spring 2013 collection, this talent was on full display in what is probably her best collection to date.

Pop Color Pop

I was showing someone my photography portfolio recently, when I realized that it really lacks color. I often shoot in color, but very seldom are my subjects colorful. I usually pay more attention to lighting the shape of the subject than creating a mood in any other way. This editorial is an attempt to break into strange territory and intentionally play with color in ways that are new, at least for me. Also, Ashley was able to pull together looks from some really talented designers like modaCYCLE favorites Mandy Coon, Tadashi Shoji, Stacey Clark, and some we’ve never featured before like L’Autre Chose, Sretsis, and Salvor.

Mandy Coon – Spring 2012 Review – A Geometric Romance

“Werewolf heads with crystals coming out of them, mirrors, and my love for rocks and crystals is my inspiration,” described the designer backstage before the show.

Mandy Coon – Fall 2011

Ms. Coon pulled off the presentation with strong geometric designs. An example would be a top made with chiffon and leather wore with a high waisted wool pants showed her talents in the use of lines. Overall her collection was playful and tasteful with strong structures.

Mandy Coon’s fall 2011 presentation revealed a darker side of this rising New York-based designer. Inspired by an image of her mother dressing in a creamy turtleneck and high-waisted trousers in the late 1970s, Ms. Coon decided to do something elegant but with a touch of mystery for her Fall 2011 collection. Almost all of the looks had some leather touches here or there. Ms. Coon also played with contrast in a few looks. One look that contained this concept was a bright magenta top with a black long dress that popped out from the dark color. The brown waves on a creamy background print long dress were also part of a refreshing piece. Ms. Coon pulled off the presentation with strong geometric designs. Mandy Coon – Spring 2011 – New York

In just her third season as a designer, Mandy Coon presented quite a collection for Spring 2011. A graceful blue shimmering water projection added movement behind the ethereal models. Makeup was minimal save for a bluish highlighter, and laurel-braided hair was reminiscent of ancient Greek idols. Ms. Coon’s collection featured textiles of sheer silk, linen, leather and burlap. Unlikely combinations indeed, but somehow she made it work.
