Guli – Spring 2011 – New York

It was very apparent from the show notes that the Guli Spring 2011 collection was designed in many ways to be an apparel ambassador for Uzbek culture.

The Material is The Message

Gulnara Karimova is a known figure on the world stage but an unknown quantity as a fashion designer. Her Guli brand is making its first appearance at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York after only three shows total worldwide. It was very apparent from the show notes that the Guli Spring 2011 collection was designed in many ways to be an apparel ambassador for Uzbek culture. The brand explained in detail the history of Uzbek textiles, subtle regional differences, and the techniques used to create them. The detailed explanation of Uzbek weaving whetted my appetite for the collection to come (I admit to “geeking out” reading about their variations on weft and warp). Mandy Coon – Spring 2011 – New York

In just her third season as a designer, Mandy Coon presented quite a collection for Spring 2011. A graceful blue shimmering water projection added movement behind the ethereal models. Makeup was minimal save for a bluish highlighter, and laurel-braided hair was reminiscent of ancient Greek idols. Ms. Coon’s collection featured textiles of sheer silk, linen, leather and burlap. Unlikely combinations indeed, but somehow she made it work.

Victor de Souza – Fall 2010 – New York

This was definitely a fashion-as-art sort of collection, with sufficient attention to wearability, and he seems to have a lot of buzz around the brand to a point where it might just be sustainable commercially, despite the unorthadoxed presentation style.

For Fall 2010, de Souza took his ideal woman and gave her an other-worldy makeover in a chic Greenwich Village Moroccan restaurant. His models drifted through the space in alien-inspired makeup, making them appear to have landed in New York City for fashion week from points far further and abroad than St. Petersburg and Rio.

Nary Manivong – Fall 2010 – New York

Nary Manivong’s Fall 2010 collection continues his use of minimalist construction, this season with influences mainly from the 40s and 80s. His silhouettes are reminiscent of the 40s, with slim flattering feminine lines. This choice helps to add a classical and more romantic touch, and balances his 80s references, which are mostly visible in the use of asymmetrical construction, abstract floral prints, and teased up-do hair. Robert Tonner – Fall 2010 Collection – New York

While so many other designers this season continued to experiment with shoulder inserts and other masculinizing elements, he has presented a collection that celebrates the classic beauty and refined quality of the bygone New York Cafe and Jazz Club cultures.

Discussing his inspiration for his fall 2010 collection, Antonio Azzuolo said, “it started when I watched Midnight Cowboy one night. I got the idea to create my own interpretation of the Wild West.” Continue reading “Antonio Azzuolo – Fall 2010 Collection – New York”

The Vessel by Lois – Fall 2010 Collection – New York

The Vessel by Lois (pronounced Loy) went off without a hitch, but almost without an audience thanks to the blizzard that hit The Eastern Seaboard the night before the show and put New York’s streets under several inches of snow. Lois Samuels, with this second collection, has definitely progressed from her freshman effort.
