Although Boris travels the world to shoot runway shows for modaCYCLE, for this editorial he stayed in his own back yard, or at least Switzerland. This was all shot with available light in the botanical gardens of the University of Basel.

Chado Ralph Rucci Spring-Summer 2010 Collection

You know how in Spiderman the ordinary kid gets bitten by a radioactive spider and gets super powers? When I look at Chado Ralph Rucci’s pieces on the runway, I think maybe this was an ordinary clothing designer who got bitten by a radioactive modernist sculptor.

You know how in Spiderman the ordinary kid gets bitten by a radioactive spider and gets super powers? When I look at Chado Ralph Rucci’s pieces on the runway, I think maybe this was an ordinary clothing designer who got bitten by a radioactive modernist sculptor. There is no point in his shows where one is not thinking a superior artist has been at work. Continue reading “Chado Ralph Rucci Spring-Summer 2010 Collection”

Instant Apocalypse – A Photo Editorial

Civilization as we know it has fallen. 4 Times Square sheds glass in high winds as if it were molting, all that remains of The Champs-Élysées is overgrown weeds, and the streets around Piazza San Marco are explored only by bats hungry for mosquitoes. Yet fashion has marshaled on. Here preserved, seven images from the last box of instant film in the world.

The latest book by one of the editors of the European fashion magazine Bunte, Paul Sahner, is all about the fabulous Karl Lagerfeld. Shaner has followed “The Kaiser” as a connoisseur for the last 15 years, with a lot of very one on one interviews, which have now been compiled into this tome.

The book covers Lagerfeld’s youth and childhood, as well as the career progression through the  middle of 2009. [editor’s note: This book is so new it is still only available printed in German, but English and French translations are expected soon. Fortunately, the modaCYCLE team includes four German fashion photographers, and one of them just finished reading it.] Continue reading “Karl – The New Biography of Karl Lagerfeld”

Gottex Spring-Summer 2010 Collection

Gottex is not new, but this season sees a new creative director at the helm of this global champ swimwear brand. The debut show put on by new designer Molly Grad was nothing short of brilliant. The high energy vibe, the sexy curvy models, and the “own it” suits made this one of the sexiest shows of the week.

Argentine Designers Spring-Summer 2010

On the last day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York’s Bryant Park, there was a collective showcase runway show by some of the top Argentinian designers.

On the last day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York’s Bryant Park, there was a collective showcase runway show by some of the top Argentinian designers. Over the last few months I’ve been encouraging our modaCYCLE photographers to be a little more experimental in their approach to runway photography. At the end of the runway you have 400 photographers with the same few standard cameras and the same few standard lenses, all trying to get pretty much the same shot. And where is the fun in that?
