Blugirl – Spring 2010 – Milan

From the lovely sand- colored daydress with sculpted shoulders and wide ribbon sash, to the flower- strewn strapless mini-dresses that closed the show, Anna Molinari’s vision of a 21st Century Blugirl is tightly a tightly edited bundle of a girl’s many moods, and a prevailing sense of fun.

The Spring 2010 Collection show for Anna Molinari’s lighthearted line, Blugirl, began with peachy- beige silks for day and explosions of color for dress- up evenings. Ruffles, animal prints, seashells and poppies added up to an unforgettable show.

Gerlan Jeans Spring-Summer 2010 Collection

I saw more confidence, stronger lines, a greter variety of print patterns, and a much more considered voice. There were more risks taken, and though the fingerprint of the what I saw before was still there, this was new, and there was obviously some editing that had gone on since she showed her first collection at Patricia Fields’ house last season.

I first met Gerlan Marcel at one of the trade shows last season. She was sitting at a table in the corridor outside Showroom Seven, surrounded by wildly colored garments with an odd texture. It turned out they were all printed denim. It was mostly printed denim jeans and jackets, some things that looked like sweat pants, but not a whole range really. Araks Spring-Summer 2010 Collection

Models were staged as student and professorial types in an academic setting for the presentation of the Araks spring-summer 2010 collection. Most known for her luxurious lingerie line, Araks Yeramyan presented a collegiate-themed line of solid and printed separates. The Library of The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen acted as the cerebral landscape and central inspiration for these daywear spring looks.

Victor de Souza Spring-Summer 2010 Collection

Walking into the white studio space, I saw a lineup of frozen models held up by the strong cuts of Victor de Souza’s spring-summer 2010 collection. It is a sublime fusion of both the classical and the fantastical.

Juan Carlos Obando Spring-Summer 2010 Collection

While many shows containing western elements may boil down to a show filled with just too whips, stirrup pants, and bow girls, Juan Carlos Obando knows how to work the style, taking in thoughts from sources disparate as Akira Kurosawa and Leone’s spaghetti dramas.

The Wild West is here! Beautiful dust-sprayed jackets and cotton fabrics, riding skirts, and hand made union gowns billowed down the runway as though it were some fashionable prairie. Each piece was thoughtfully created and wearable. While many shows containing western elements may boil down to a show filled with just too whips, stirrup pants, and bow girls, Juan Carlos Obando knows how to work the style, taking in thoughts from sources disparate as Akira Kurosawa and Leone’s spaghetti dramas. Mid-town Manhattan from on high was the backdrop as black and white film projections tickled the walls for the Bespoken spring-summer 2010 collection presentation. Originally all about the shirts, the label has now evolved into suits and especially into fitted jackets. The designers experimented with fabrics such as seersucker and wax cotton to give the traditional men’s suit a refreshing youthful edge. Continue reading “Bespoken Spring-Summer 2010 Collection”

General Idea Spring-Summer 2010 Collection

There was a bit of a wait for the start of the General Idea show, but it was actually nice to get cooled off and have a few minutes to scan the crowd and wave hellos. There were a lot of buyers in the audience and the international press came out in force. The wait and heat were no bother once the show started and the brilliant thread of thought designer Bum Suk Choi began expressing wit the Fall 2009 show was continued for Spring 2010 in lighter fabrications.
