Elite Model Look 2009 – Swiss Finale

The finale of the Swiss Elite Model Look contest took place last week at the Maag Music Hall in Zurich. Several hundred girls applied for the Swiss contest, which will lead to the world finale in China in October. Unlike myriad beauty competitions or TV model “reality” shows, the result of the Elite Model Look competition is often a real opportunity for the winners to enter the business as established models. Some of the world’s top models have been “discovered” through this contest over the years.

Fashion Movies

From Sabrina to Valentino The Last Emperor, to Clueless, The Thomas Crown Affair, and Who Are You Polly Magoo, with 40 more for good measure, this is modaCYCLE’s ridiculously long list of fashion movies… part one.

Recently, Sandy Ramirez, Darrah Leffler, and Charles Beckwith were sitting around a table at a popular diner in Brooklyn and started talking about movies related to fashion. Once they got rolling they started writing down this list of films. Some, like Valentino: The Last Emperor, are all about fashion, while others, like Pretty Woman or Gone With The Wind, are listed for a single defining scene. To find out why some of these were included you would really have to ask Charles or Sandy. While we were preparing this article, Boris Marberg added a vote for 1968’s The Thomas Crown Affair, and Cameron Carpenter suggested The Talented Mr. Ripley. This list is not in any particular order. Very colorful and the designer concentrated on details, especially the embroidery. Many pieces gave the same impression one gets from traditional colorful Tibetan ceremonial clothing, but with 1980’s touches, as seen most clearly in the color choices, tight fits, and shoulder embellishments. Fashion Ethics? Green is good.

“Clothes are more than what you wear, they’re how you choose to live.”

reportage and photos by Boris Marberg

The “green is the new black” trend has been showing up for a while, but the new buzzword is “ethical.” This is not just the organic materials and dyes or cloth shopping bags, but a leap into defining not just environmentally friendly products, but people friendly process. This delves beyond organic materials and goes into defining fair business practices when dealing with garment workers in developing nations. Continue reading “Fashion Ethics? Green is good.”

John Varvatos, Spring 2010 Collection at Milan Moda Uomo

The John Varvatos Spring-Summer 2010 Collection was a series of clean cut, soft garments, and silky looks in black, red, silver, grey-blue, and yellow. Refined fits were on display, especially in the classically-inspired coats and jackets. The addition of light scarves and shades to several looks projected a “too cool” vibe. Wearing looks from this line will surely boost the appearance of confidence for young businessmen on the move.
